Taiwan Transportation Safety Board Co-hosts International Forum and Special Seminar with UC Berkeley’s PATH

The Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) co-organized the "2024 International Forum on EV/AV/AI Safety & Technology" with the Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH) Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley, on August 19 and 20, 2024. The forum, which spanned a day and a half, was held at the Taipei International Convention Center. Additionally, on August 21, the TTSB hosted the "2024 Electric Vehicles and Autonomous Vehicles Seminar" at its headquarter.

The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by TTSB Chairman Shinn-Der Lin, with a primary focus on two key topics: "Electric Vehicles" and "Autonomous Vehicles and Artificial Intelligence," particularly emphasizing safety technologies related to emerging technologies. The TTSB specially invited two leading experts from the U.S. in the fields of electric and autonomous vehicles-Dr. Scott Moura, Director of PATH Research Center at the UC Berkeley, and Dr. Ching-Yao Chan, Director of Berkeley DeepDrive (BDD)-to share their experiences and perspectives on the research and development, regulations, and practical implementation of safety technologies for EVs, AVs, and AI.

The rapid development of electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence, supported by government policies and industry innovation worldwide, has set these technologies on course to become the mainstream of future transportation. To enhance the TTSB's capabilities in occurrence investigation within the advanced transportation sector, the TTSB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with UC Berkeley on September 19, 2023. This MOU aims to foster cooperation in areas such as information sharing, investigation technologies, and personnel training. This forum represents the first realization of the collaboration initiated by the MOU.

The forum brought together approximately 170 participants from various sectors, including industry, government, academia, and research. In his opening remarks, Chairman Lin expressed his hope that this opportunity for international exchange would establish a bridge for cross-border communication and knowledge sharing. He emphasized that, beyond accumulating professional expertise, the forum would also contribute to advancements in safety technologies, helping to promote correct public understanding and confidence in using these emerging transportation modes, thereby driving the development of domestic industries related to electric and autonomous vehicles.

The international forum and seminar provided a valuable platform for participants to exchange experiences and information related to electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence. Through interactive discussions with international experts and scholars, the events underscored the importance of transportation safety and further enhanced the TTSB's capabilities in investigating emerging transportation technologies.
