Vantaaʼs population exceeds 250 000

In August 2024, Vantaaʼs population broke the quarter of a million mark. Population growth is expected to remain strong in the future.

In five decades, Vantaa has grown from a rural municipality to one of the largest cities in Finland.

This growth is forecast to continue. It is important for us to continue to offer diverse housing, good schools and kindergartens, and good transport connections, says Mayor Pekka Timonen.

According to Statistics Finland, Vantaa had 250 073 inhabitants at the end of August.

Vantaaʼs dependency ratio is above average

More than half of Vantaa residents are under 40 years old. Vantaaʼs migration gain also largely comes from adults under 40.

The migration of young adults is a major positive for the dependency ratio in Vantaa. The dependency ratio is defined as the number of people under 18 and 65 and over per 100 people of working age.

In 2023, Vantaaʼs dependency ratio will be 55, compared to 61.9 for Finland as a whole.

There is a labour force and a young population. As long as we invest in the right skills and develop educational pathways, the young and growing population will also attract businesses to Vantaa, says Vesa Kokkonen, Head of Strategy and Research in the City of Vantaa.

Growth in the population of Vantaa was driven by inward migration and the birth rate

In January-August 2024, more people have moved from Vantaa to other Finnish municipalities than have moved from them to Vantaa. However, this so-called net domestic migration has been much less negative (-171 persons) than in the same period last year (-819 persons).

Net migration is defined as the difference between the number of people moving into and out of the city.

In January-August 2024, Vantaa received a net outward migration gain of 2 549 persons. This was about a fifth less than in the same period the previous year.

Natural population growth, the difference between births and deaths, has been the same in both years since the beginning of the year. In 2024 it was +506 persons.

According to the forecast, the 280 000 population threshold will be exceeded in the 2030s

Vantaa is still the fourth largest city in Finland.

By far the largest of Vantaaʼs major areas in terms of population is Myyrmäki, with 60 500 inhabitants at the end of 2023. The second largest was Tikkurila, with 48 900 inhabitants.

These areas also experienced the highest population growth during 2023.

Vantaaʼs population will continue to grow in the future. According to the 2023 forecast, the city will have 260 000 inhabitants in 2026 and will exceed 280 000 in the early 2030s.
