Press conference of the Coalition on Phasing Out Fossil Fuel Incentives Including Subsidies (COFFIS).
During the United Nations Climate Conference in Dubai (COP 28), the Netherlands launched an international coalition to phase out fossil fuel subsidies. Countries that joined the coalition include the Netherlands, Austria, the federal government of Belgium, Ireland, Spain, Finland, Antigua and Barbuda, Canada, France, Denmark, Costa Rica, and Luxemburg.
A carbon-free global economy requires the phasing out of fossil fuel subsidies. That's why the Glasgow Climate Summit in 2021 agreed to phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, following a similar G20 decision from 2009. However, an important part of all fossil benefits is tied up in international agreements, prompting countries to join forces and establish a coalition to phase out these benefits.
The coalition's secretariat is hosted by IISD.
