Fire safety assistant training is an essential part of occupational safety for many companies. But how long is fire safety assistant training valid for? We provide the answer.

Period of validity of fire safety assistant training

Fire safety assistant training is not valid indefinitely. The validity of fire safety assistant training is generally specified as 3 to 5 years. This fire safety assistant validity is based on DGUV information 205-023 of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), which deals intensively with the training and qualification of fire safety assistants.

Important factors for the period of validity of fire safety assistants

In addition to the general recommendation of 3 to 5 years, there are some factors that may result in the need for earlier refresher training. Such scenarios occur primarily when there are significant operational changes that increase the risk of fire or affect the role of fire safety assistants. Examples of this are

  • Changes to the company's fire safety regulations
  • New processes or technologies that change the fire risk or require new extinguishing agents
  • Reorganisation in the company or a significant turnover of employees
  • An actual fire incident in the company
  • An expansion of the workplace that requires new fire safety measures

In such cases, the employer should adjust the interval for the period of validity of the fire safety assistant training in accordance with the risk assessment. The basis for this is provided by the Technical Rules for Workplaces (ASR A2.2), among others.

Why is the validity of fire safety assistant training limited?

The repetition of fire safety assistant training is not only a formal requirement, but also crucial to ensure safety in the company.

Fire safety assistants play a key role in preventing fires and responding quickly in the event of an emergency. Regular training keeps them up to date with the latest technology and enables them to respond efficiently to new fire hazards.

In addition, valid training is also relevant for the legal protection of the company. Insurance companies and employers' liability insurance associations require that fire safety assistants receive regular training. Outdated training could lead to problems in the event of damage and make the company liable.
