Sacramento Police share winter driving tips as rainy season begins

As rain and winter weather set in, the Sacramento Police Department is asking drivers to take extra precautions on the road. With slick conditions increasing the risk of accidents and flooding, officers are providing critical tips to keep the community safe.

"Driving safely during wet weather can make all the difference," said Sgt. Dan Wiseman of the Sacramento Police Department. "It's important to slow down, stay aware, and make sure your vehicle is ready for the road."

Key safety reminders

Drive slowly:
Wet roads reduce traction and make stopping more difficult. Drivers should increase their following distance to allow extra time to react to the vehicles ahead.

Turn around, don't drown:
Flooded roads are dangerous and often underestimated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars, while two feet can sweep away larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded areas and obey all road closure signs.

Watch for pedestrians and cyclists:
Rainy weather reduces visibility, particularly at night. Be extra vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists, who can be harder to see in low-light or poor weather conditions.

Preparing your vehicle

The department is also reminding drivers to prepare their vehicles for winter weather. Check headlights, brake lights, windshield wipers, and defrosters to ensure they're working properly. Keep coolant levels topped off and consider installing heavy-duty winter wipers if snow and ice are frequent in your area.

Before you hit the road

Planning ahead is critical for winter travel. Sacramento police recommend checking road conditions and preparing an emergency kit with essentials like blankets, water, food, a flashlight, jumper cables, and a charged cellphone.

"Preparation and caution can save lives," Sgt. Wiseman added. "Driving in bad weather requires your full attention and a vehicle that's in top shape. Stay safe and look out for one another."
