Providing housing for all income levels is a focus for all Bay Area cities, including Palo Alto. Palo Alto has long been a leader in the production of affordable housing and currently has the second highest inventory of affordable housing for incorporated jurisdictions within Santa Clara County (as a percentage of total housing stock).

Palo Alto Housing by the Numbers

  • $52 million contributed or pledged towards affordable housing since 2017
  • Approximately 2,300 units or ~9% of total housing stock dedicated to affordable housing (deed restricted)
  • Over 1,000 housing units permitted in the last eight years

JULY 17, 2024 UPDATE:

Revised Housing Element- Public Comment Period Through July 24

The City received a comment letter from California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) on July 9, 2024, requesting minor revisions to the City's Housing Element before it can be certified, which is anticipated later this summer. The requested revisions clarify existing Housing Element Program language and are non-substantive in nature. The revisions fall within the authority provided by the City Council, when the Housing Element was readopted on April 15, 2024, for staff to make minor revisions to the document to address HCD comments. Staff met with HCD earlier this week to review the proposed revisions, and a revised draft is now available. Per State law, the public comment period is set at least seven days prior to submitting the draft revisions to HCD. Share feedback by 5 p.m. on July 24, 2024 via email at [email protected] or mail Coleman Frick, Long Range Planning Manager, 250 Hamilton Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94301.

These revisions are incorporated in the revised 2023-31 Palo Alto Adopted Housing Element, which is available for public review now through July 24. Provide feedback by emailing [email protected].
