National Voter Registration Day, Human Rights Campaign Foundation Report Finds More Than 95% of LGBTQ+ Adults are Registered to Vote, Nearly 75% are “Very” Motivated to Vote in[...]

WASHINGTON - Today, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF), the educational arm of the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, released findings that show strong majorities of LGBTQ+ adults are registered and motivated to vote in the November 2024 elections. The results come from the annual HRCF 2024 LGBTQ+ Climate Survey, a survey of over 2,400 LGBTQ+ Americans that was completed between Aug. 8-18, 2024. Through our nonpartisan coalition partnership with Pride to the Polls- an initiative advancing LGBTQ+ voter engagement - HRCF is supporting the LGBTQ+ community as one of thefastest growing voting blocs in the country, with approximately 20 million eligible voters this fall.

"These findings underscore the power of LGBTQ+ voters," said Shoshana K. Goldberg, Director of Public Education & Research at the Human Rights Campaign. "Virtually all LGBTQ+ Americans are registered and motivated to vote in this election. The LGBTQ+ community is diverse, with a wide range of issues, from the economy to civil rights to democracy, that bring the community to the polls. Without a doubt, LGBTQ+ voters will continue to use the ballot box to fight for our right to live and thrive free from discrimination in this election and beyond."

Key findings from the reportinclude:

  • An overwhelming majority (over 95%) of LGBTQ+ adults are registered to vote, and this number is consistent across all age groups
  • Non-Hispanic Black and White LGBTQ+ adults are the most likely to be registered (98.1 and 97.5%, respectively), while nearly 91% of Hispanic LGBTQ+ adults are registered.
  • More than 87% of LGBTQ+ adults are very motivated to vote in this election, including 73% who say they are "very motivated" to vote. While a majority of all age groups report they are very motivated to vote, motivation increases with age (81% somewhat or very motivated for Gen Z versus 95% for voters over 60) but does not vary significantly across race or ethnicity.
  • The top 5 issues that are motivating LGBTQ+ adults to vote are:
    • LGBTQ+ Equality/anti-LGBTQ+ legislation (51.6%)
    • Abortion/Reproductive Rights (46.9%)
    • SCOTUS judges/judicial reform (32.7%)
    • Inflation/Cost of Living (31.4%)
    • Project 2025 (27.1%)
  • More than 92% of LGBTQ+ adults have heard about Project 2025, including more than a third (34.5%) who have heard a lot about it. Project 2025, also known as the 'Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise,' is a 922-page agenda that serves as a blueprint for how a presidential administration could dramatically overhaul the executive branch. Created by the conservative think-tank the Heritage Foundation, it focuses on dismantling many existing environmental, voting, and civil rights policies, including those which offer protections for LGBTQ+ Americans.
    • Project 2025 is viewed unfavorably by nearly 94% (93.7%) of LGBTQ+ adults, including a more than 97% unfavorable rating from Gen Z.

In addition, the poll, which began collecting data two weeks after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and was completed before the Democratic National Convention, found that LGBTQ+ voters prefer Kamala Harris to Donald Trump in the presidential race by a nearly 67 point margin (74% for Harris/Walz versus 7.5% for Trump/Vance). When restricted to those who planned to vote (95.8% of sample), the Harris/Walz lead is almost 70 points.
