AIC launches new Game Feed training course to support Feed Adviser and Gamekeeper best practice

The Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) has launched a valuable new training course designed to enhance the understanding of feed advisers, gamekeepers, and landowners on critical antimicrobial resistance and biosecurity issues.

The renowned Feed Adviser Register (FAR), which is run by AIC, released its latest Continuous Professional Development (CPD) module on 4 July 2024.

Titled "Managing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Biosecurity in the Gamebird Sector", this online course builds on the AMR and biosecurity knowledge covered in the FAR's popular Game Feed Module 1 training launched in 2022. Participants will need to have completed the Game Feed Module 1 before they can progress to the latest training.

The course is suitable for feed advisers, gamebird breeders, rearers, keepers, landowners, shoot owners, and game meat buyers who want to develop their understanding of the role and responsibility of the game sector in antimicrobial stewardship and learn how the consequences of poor biosecurity measures can impact game bird production.

David Moss, AIC Technical Manager explains that the new FAR Game Feed CPD module is one of a series of shorter modules that explore key areas in more detail.

"This valuable new training module provides the game feed sector with a detailed understanding of antimicrobial resistance and biosecurity and can be completed in about 55 minutes."

The module can be completed in participants' own time, at their own pace, with online assessment. Successful participants will receive a certificate of completion.

The module is available free of charge to all FAR Members, while non-Members can join FAR as an Associate Member for an annual fee of £95 (excluding VAT) in order to access the training module.

Participants need to have first completed the Game Feed Module 1 before taking this second module, with those who have already completed it able to access the new training via the online portal.

Industry backing

Dominic Boulton, Public Relations and Politics Adviser at the Game Farmers Association, supports the development of the new module.

He commented: "This exciting new initiative from AIC should be compulsory for anyone involved in the supply chain of medicated game feeds and those who feed them to their birds.

"It provides a comprehensive background to antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic stewardship and the crucial role that we can all play in using medication effectively and protecting human and animal health."

Kenny Stokes-Nutting, Director at St David's Poultry Team Veterinary Surgeons, backs the training's aims.

He added: "This timely module on antimicrobial resistance and biosecurity will undoubtedly support the industry at a time when reducing antibiotics and tightening biosecurity has never been more important."

Further game feed CPD modules are planned by AIC, with the next due for launch in 2025.
