Governor Polis Releases Statement Celebrating the Inauguration of Mexico's First Female President Claudia Sheinbaum

DENVER - Today, Governor Polis released the following statement congratulating and celebrating the Presidential Inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City.

"History was made today in Mexico, as Claudia Sheinbaum became the first female president in the country's history. President Sheinbaum envisions a future for Mexico where communities are safe, people can gain the necessary skills to get a good-paying job and power the economy, and families have the resources needed to support loved ones. I am excited to continue to grow our agricultural partnerships and foster strong trade agreements between Colorado and Mexico, while continuing to strengthen the cultural ties that unite Mexico and Colorado," said Governor Polis.

Mexico is one of Colorado' top trade partners. In 2023 Colorado exported $1.6 billion to Mexico and imported $1.2 billion from Mexico. Mexico is the second largest export partner for the state, accounting for 16% of Colorado's export trade, while they are the third largest import partner for the state.

Over the last five years, Colorado companies with investment projects in Mexico have generated $69 million in capital expenditure and created an estimated 447 jobs.

Agriculture is also an important part of the Colorado-Mexico relationship. In 2021, Gov. Polis applauded a decision by the Mexican Supreme Court that allowed the Mexican government to lift a barrier to imports of U.S. fresh potatoes, including those from Colorado. Gov. Polis participated in the US-Mexico Parliamentary exchange while serving in Congress and co-chaired the bipartisan US-Mexico Friendship Caucus.

In 2022, Governor Polis joined Colorado Department of Agriculture Commissioner Kate Greenberg, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt to announce that Colorado would expand export markets for Colorado's potato producers.
