Kent County Animal Shelter Prepares 19 Rescued Dogs for Adoption Journey

Grand Rapids, Mich. (Nov. 21, 2024) - Nineteen dogs of various ages and breeds were surrendered to the Kent County Animal Shelter (KCAS) on Tuesday afternoon after being removed by Kent County Animal Control from their previous owner in October. These dogs are now beginning their journey toward adoption, though their availability depends on necessary veterinary evaluations and care.

On October 14, 2024, authorities responded to a 911 call about a red Chevy Silverado parked at a Dollar Tree in Walker. The owner was found living in the vehicle with 17 dogs in poor conditions. The dogs were taken to the Kent County Animal Shelter (KCAS) for care. Since their arrival, one of the dogs has given birth to two puppies, increasing the total number of dogs to 19. The owner, charged with animal abuse, pleaded not guilty, surrendered the dogs, and had her bond lowered. She faces up to four years in prison, a $5,000 fine, and 500 hours of community service.

"Many of the dogs have friendly dispositions and, once cleared, are likely to be adopted quickly," said Angela Hollinshead, KCAS Director. "Our veterinary team is working to complete spay/neuter surgeries and address any medical or behavioral needs."

Adoption Opportunities

With these additions, the KCAS is now caring for 94 dogs. However, over 30 dogs have already been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, microchipped, and are ready for adoption. From now until December 1, the KCAS is offering a special adoption fee of just $50 for all dogs. This fee includes:

• A QR smart Kent County Dog License
• An extra month of prescription flea/tick preventative
• Heartworm preventative

"We currently have 94 dogs in our care and knowing that we can begin the path to adoption for this new group of dogs is a huge relief," said Hollinshead. "If you are ready to welcome a new best friend into your life, our compassionate and knowledgeable staff are here to help you."
