Pitt County woman charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today that Kristen Lee Carter, 34, of 114 N. Meade St., Greenville, N.C. was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense. Both charges are felonies.

According to special agents with the N.C. Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division, Carter submitted false invoices under a fictitious business name to American Banks Insurance Company of Florida in an attempt to receive payment for damage to a swimming pool that was different than the one she actually owned. The value of false claim was for $5,199.90.

The incident occurred on Jan. 16, 2024, according to the arrest warrants.

Carter was served a criminal summons on Oct. 9. She is expected to appear in Beaufort County District Court on Nov. 7, 2024.

"Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet," Commissioner Causey said. "Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I'm fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina."
