Lakewood Avenue Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project Construction Look Ahead - Upcoming Road Closures

The City appreciates your ongoing patience with the work along the busy corridors associated with this project. Additional information regarding this project can be found at: https://www.durhamnc.gov/3976/Lakewood-Avenue-Sewer-Replacement-Project.

Lakewood Avenue is anticipated to be reopened to traffic today, September 16.

Roxboro Street will have continued lane closures between Hillside Ave and Morehead Ave through Fall 2024 to accommodate sanitary sewer installations.

Additional information about the work and planned impacts are described below.

Planned Road / Lane Closures will occur as follows:

  • Week of 9/16:
    • Lakewood Avenue will be reopened to traffic.
    • Lane shifts in Roxboro Street between Hillside Avenue and Morehead Avenue.
  • Week of 9/23:
    • Lane shifts in Roxboro Street between Hillside Avenue and Morehead Avenue.
  • Future Week(s):
    • The Roxboro Street lane shifts are anticipated to remain in place.

Bicycle Lane and Sidewalk impacts will occur as follows:

  • Portions of the sidewalk near work areas along Roxboro Street will have temporary closures.

Saturday and Sunday - September 14-15, 2024:

  • On Saturday, Roxboro Street lane shifts will be implemented between Hillside Ave and Morehead Ave to accommodate sanitary sewer installation. No work will take place on Sunday.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for the lane closures and shifts. Northbound Roxboro St traffic will be maintained.
    • Temporary pavement markings will be installed to shift traffic lanes along Roxboro St.
    • Additional lane shifts and/or flaggers will be used for temporary lane shifts during construction.
    • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted in this area.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
    • No water or sewer service disruptions are anticipated.

Week of September 16, 2024:

  • Lakewood Avenue between Blackwell Street and Roxboro Street is anticipated to be reopened to traffic.
  • Roxboro Street lane shifts will be implemented between Hillside Ave and Morehead Ave to accommodate sanitary sewer installation.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for the lane closures and shifts. Northbound Roxboro St traffic will be maintained.
    • Temporary pavement markings will be installed to shift traffic lanes along Roxboro St.
    • Additional lane shifts and/or flaggers will be used for temporary lane shifts during construction.
    • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted in this area.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
    • No water or sewer service disruptions are anticipated.
  • Stream Restoration work will take place north of Lakewood Avenue near the American Tobacco Trail.
    • No impacts to roadways or trails are anticipated.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
    • No water or sewer service disruptions are anticipated.

Saturday and Sunday - September 21-22, 2024:

  • On Saturday, Roxboro Street lane shifts will be implemented between Hillside Ave and Morehead Ave to accommodate sanitary sewer installation. No work will take place on Sunday.

Projected Future Work (pending progress and weather):

  • Roxboro Street lane shifts will remain in place to accommodate sanitary sewer installation. Sanitary sewer installations in Roxboro Street are anticipated to be completed in Fall 2024.
  • Stream restoration work near the American Tobacco Trail is anticipated to be completed in Fall 2024.
