Health sciences authors recognized with awards

More than 100 authors and a range of health aspects were highlighted at the 18th East Carolina University Health Sciences Author Recognition Awards.

Award winners representing the Brody School of Medicine, College of Allied Health Sciences, College of Nursing, College of Health and Human Performance, Laupus Health Sciences Library and the School of Dental Medicine were recognized for their works published between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2024. In all, 136 authors produced six books, 32 book chapters and 398 journal articles.

As Beth Ketterman, director of Laupus Health Sciences Library, congratulated the winners, she emphasized how their work contributed to key focus areas of public health, clinical research, education, mental health and well-being, environmental health, and health equity and social determinants of health.

"The dedication and creativity of our authors are evident not only in these and many other research topics, but also in their commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration," Ketterman said. "Many of the studies published by our faculty and staff are the result of collaborations that cross departmental and institutional boundaries. These partnerships allow for a richer and more comprehensive approach to complex health issues, bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise."

The book authors received bronze medallions. They were Dr. Sheena Eagan, Dr. Leigh Cellucci, Dr. Laura Matarese, Dr. Sy Saeed, Megan Inman and Marlena Rose.

Inman and Rose were co-editors for an award-winning book - "Building Health Sciences Library Collection: A Handbook" - that also included ECU contributing authors Jeanne Hoover, head of scholarly communication for Academic Library Services, and Kerry Sewell, research development director in the College of Health and Human Performance.

Their book is a resource for selecting sources and curating library health sciences collections, especially for people new to librarianship. It won a national-level Daniel T. Richards Prize and is one of the many examples of successful collaboration lauded at the ceremony.

"It was great and a pleasure to work with Megan and the librarians at ECU and across the country on this work," Rose said. "It was special to receive the medallion at the Health Sciences Author Recognition event and be honored in front of my health sciences colleagues."

Rose is assistant director of collections and historical services at Laupus, and Inman is a collection development librarian. The Brody School of Medicine had 63 awardees, including book authors Eagan, Saeed and Matarese.

Ketterman and Dr. Greg Kearney, associate professor in the Department of Public Health and chair of the Friends of Laupus Library, provided congratulatory remarks prior to award recognition. The Friends of Laupus Library sponsored the event.

"We honor the ECU health sciences researchers, clinicians and educators whose scholarship not only advances their fields, but also reaches across disciplines, breaks boundaries and improves the lives of individuals and communities around the world," Ketterman said. "In health sciences, knowledge is both a tool and a responsibility. Each study published, each data point analyzed and every article written advances standards of practice, health policy, health education and furthers scientific progress. Authorship is one of the most visible and impactful ways for health sciences professionals to share insights, foster innovation and inspire future generations. We acknowledge the work represented by our authors and celebrate the difference they make through their commitment to scholarship."
