Recreational Fire Safety Tips

After recent dry weather in our area, local fire departments seen an increase of fires related to the use of recreational fire pits. By following these guidelines and safety tips, you can enjoy your recreational fire while keeping yourself and others safe:

• Place fire pits at least 15 feet away from any combustible structure
• Burn only clean, dry wood. Yard waste and construction materials should not be burned.
• Fires are limited to 3 feet in diameter and less than 2 feet in height
• Never leave a fire unattended
• Use the protective covering or screen if your fire pit has one
• Have a quick method to extinguish the fire if needed: soak with water, spray with a fire extinguisher, or smother with dirt
• Extinguish and cover your fire pit after every use
• Call 911 if the fire becomes out of control
