Flipboard Brings Human and AI Curation to Bluesky

We're thrilled to be bringing more of what makes Flipboard special - that magical mix of human curation and machine learning - to Bluesky. Now you can follow our most high-profile feeds in "The Atmosphere," including seven of our hand-curated editorial desks and four custom feeds based on our Topic AI.

Our desks curate breaking news, in-depth stories, and critical perspectives about news, tech, culture, science and climate, and art and photography, respectively. Each of these accounts is staffed by real humans - journalists and professional curators - with expertise in discovering, vetting, and elevating the best content.

We're not trying to replicate all the breaking news services out there. We also don't want to flood your feed with a post every few minutes. Instead, our goal is to give people on Bluesky deeper context about the day's events. We do this by selectively curating stories from trusted publishers and amplifying thoughtful writers, reporters, experts, and commenters.

We've been using AI technology long before it was trendy. Machine learning helps to ensure that your Flipboard experience is topical, relevant, and responsive to your interests. Our AI topic algorithms assign categories to stories shared to Flipboard Magazines. For example, a story might be tagged Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and even Generative AI and appear in those respective topic feeds. Those are all feeds people can follow and personalize on Flipboard.

Now we're bringing this technology to Bluesky in the form of four custom feeds:

• Business by Flipboard
• Celeb by Flipboard
• Lifestyle by Flipboard

Flipboard's Bluesky Custom Feeds, Explained

How does this work, exactly? Creating any custom feed starts with the firehose of content being posted to Bluesky. Flipboard's AI technology then chooses which posts are relevant to a specific topic and organizes a feed for people to follow on Bluesky. For example, in our Tech custom feed, our AI topic extraction algorithms don't just look at the raw text being posted to Bluesky. It digs into shared articles, analyzes the content inside them, and confirms that the article meets Flipboard's quality standards. This ensures that the feed on Bluesky is both on-topic and good quality.

Other developers are experimenting with this too. We're all contributing to Bluesky's marketplace of algorithms, which lets people decide what they want to see and how they want to see it. No longer are any of us at the mercy of one opaque For You feed.
