New Crisp County Reedy Branch Tributary bridge opening

ARABI - A new bridge is scheduled to open Monday, Nov. 4 on Watson Road over the Reedy Branch Tributary.

It replaces the old bridge that was built in 1950. The low-traffic concrete and steel bridge had a posted weight limit of five tons. It was structurally deficient and the road showed signs of flooding from the stream.

Traffic used a detour during construction, which started earlier this year. The new bridge has two, nine-foot lanes and two-foot shoulders. It is raised slightly to provide additional clearance over the stream.

The total cost of the Georgia Department of Transportation project is approximately $3.3 million, which includes preliminary engineering, right of way acquisition and construction. The $1.1 million construction contract was awarded in late 2023 to Griffin Grading & Concrete LLC. The project is part of Georgia DOT's Low Impact Bridge Program (LIBP). The program delivers new bridges at a lower cost through the use of some prefabricated components. The LIBP helps reduce the number of structurally deficient local bridges that have posted weight limits or have closed due to deterioration. Georgia DOT inspects all bridges every two years.
