The Department of Biological Sciences will host a colloquium titled "We Need to Talk: Communicating Science Beyond the Academy," on Friday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m. in Wehr Life Sciences 111. The event will feature Dr. Rachel Morris, senior specialist in the biomedical laboratory diagnostics program at Michigan State University.

Morris earned an A.S. of medical laboratory science and a B.A. in biology from the University of Maine at Augusta. She earned her Ph.D. in biological sciences with a specialization in microbiology from Marquette in 2011.

Morris enjoys training the next generation of medical health professionals and has been passionate about science education throughout her career, mentoring and teaching high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Her areas of research interest include the microbial ecology of anaerobic wastewater treatment, the physiology and ecology of bacteria in low oxygen environments, diagnostic microbiology, and faculty development.

The Biological Sciences Department's Friday Seminar Series is supported by the Scholl Endowment. Eminent scientists are invited to the department to deliver seminars, and students have ample opportunity to engage these scientists in individual or group conversation.
