Conemaugh Health System celebrated breakthrough in vascular care with groundbreaking technology

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is proud to announce a significant advancement in vascular care.

George DeKornfeld, MD, a vascular surgeon at Conemaugh, has successfully utilized the EspritTM-a revolutionary new stent scaffold designed to treat peripheral artery disease (PAD) below the knee. Conemaugh is the second healthcare system in Pennsylvania to implement the latest technology for its patients.

This groundbreaking system, the first of its kind, helps to keep arteries open while delivering everolimus, a drug that decreases the likelihood of early disease recurrence. The stent scaffold dissolves over time, leaving the artery supported and healthier.

PAD affects more than 20 million people in the United States, with limited treatment options available, especially for chronic limb-threatening ischemia below the knee-a severe form of the disease. In these cases, arteries become blocked with plaque, cutting off blood and oxygen flow to the lower leg and foot. Without intervention, these blockages can lead to severe complications and significantly increase mortality rates.

However, advances in medical technology are transforming treatment options.

"This stent provides a revolutionary solution for treating arterial blockages below the knee, which frequently lead to amputation and high mortality within five years," said Dr. DeKornfeld. "It offers a minimally invasive alternative to conventional treatments such as balloon angioplasty or surgical bypass, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and broadening our treatment options."

The EspritTM Below the Knee System, approved by the FDA in 2024, uses dissolving materials similar to surgical sutures. After the device is implanted through a catheter-based procedure, it opens blocked arteries and supports healing before dissolving. This offers a promising new option for patients facing severe PAD.

"Conemaugh Health System is dedicated to bringing the latest advancements in vascular care to our community," Dr. DeKornfeld added. "This procedure is a significant step forward for patients with critical limb ischemia and peripheral artery disease, providing hope where options were once limited."

Dr. Elizabeth Dunmore, Chief Medical Officer, added, "As a leader in innovative healthcare, Conemaugh Health System remains committed to ensuring our community has access to the most advanced treatments available. This new technology reflects our ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of patient care."
