Parks Advisory Board votes to amend City Code for potential e-bike policy

The Colorado Springs Parks Advisory Board voted today to support changes to City Code that would make a path to adopt a new policy regarding the use of electric-assisted bicycles (e-bikes) across the city's park system possible. This decision comes in response to the growing popularity of e-bikes and increasing public requests to expand their access within the parks. The proposed ordinance will now proceed to City Council for final approval.

The motion, passed by a vote of 4 to 3, recommends to City Council the approval of an ordinance amending the Code of Colorado Springs 2001 that pertains to the definition of electric-assisted bicycles that would define class 1, class 2 and class 3 electric-assisted bicycles as non-motorized use.

"Today's recommendation from the Parks Advisory Board reflects our commitment to providing a recreational environment that meets the needs of our community, creating a more accessible and inclusive trail system while balancing safety and conservation efforts," said Lonna Thelen, manager of Colorado Springs trails, open space and parks (TOPS). "We recognize the increasing demand for e-bike access and are excited to offer more opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy our beautiful trails."

Should the ordinance be approved City Council, implementation details will be communicated to the public, along with maps indicating where e-bikes can be utilized and education on safety and trail etiquette.
