Lawn clippings are a major pain for storm drains

Lawn clippings are a major pain for storm drains

As fall and winter yard prep begins, the City's Stormwater Program reminds residents to keep grass clippings and fallen leaves away from storm drains.

Why does debris in drains matter? When drainage systems get clogged, it can lead to flooding and standing water in streets and yards.

Leave it on the lawn: Mulched yard trimmings and leaves can serve as a natural compost, returning valuable nutrients to your soil. Alternatively, rake up the clippings, bag them and set them out for pickup on collection day. Review the rules for bagging yard trimmings here.

Don't blow it: Avoid using a leaf blower to push clippings and leaves into storm drains or nearby creeks and channels. This debris blocks drainage systems and eventually pollutes creeks, rivers and lakes, as stormwater flows directly downstream.

Key takeaway: Only rain down the storm drain!

If you encounter a clogged storm drain, call 817-392-3279 or report it through the MyFW app.
