Newton Fire Department Secures AFG Grant for Key Upgrades

The Newton Fire Department has been awarded the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from FEMA to support three significant projects. The grant will fund the following:

  • Plymovent Exhaust Removal System Upgrade: This equipment captures vehicle exhaust at the source, improving air quality and safety.
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Training Resource Library Update: These resources are essential for training new firefighters in basic firefighting skills.
  • Training Room AV Equipment Upgrade: The current AV controller is outdated and unrepairable, so new audio-visual equipment will enhance training capabilities.

The total cost of these projects is $77,076.48, with $74,076.48 covered by federal funds and a local match of $3,703.82.

Since 2001, the AFG program has helped fire departments acquire essential equipment, gear, vehicles, training, and other resources to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire hazards. Over the past 20 years, the Newton Fire Department has successfully secured $1,033,397.48 in AFG funds, with $977,658.67 from federal sources and $56,442.63 from local matches.
