TxDOT Slated to Begin Main Street Repaving Project

Fredericksburg, Texas - The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is scheduled to begin a repaving project of U.S. Highway 290, known as Main Street in Fredericksburg, this week.

The plan is for work to take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day and includes striping, full-depth repairs as needed, milling and overlay from Cristol Drive east of town to the intersection of Highways 290 West and 87 North on the westside.

Depending on weather, the project is slated to start on Tuesday, July 23 with the removal of existing pavement striping and then the new striping plan and lane configurations will be implemented.

Full depth repairs will begin in approximately two weeks with most of that work being on the eastside of the project. During the project, cars should not be parked overnight on Main Street. Signage will be placed by the contractor ahead of time to alert the public of imminent construction.

As part of the process, Main Street will undergo some striping changes, including the elimination of the center median to give extra room in the outside lane. This action is designed to help the flow of traffic along Main Street where longer vehicles currently extend out into that lane. There will also be improvements to dedicated turn lanes throughout town as well as modifications to reduce vehicle and pedestrian conflicts.

There will also be signal upgrades, traffic flow and striping changes, along North Washington, South Adams and South Llano Streets, which aim to alleviate traffic congestion. These changes are being implemented from a plan developed by Kimley-Horn as part of its 2020 Traffic Impact Study for the City.

The modifications to traffic signals and other alterations will be deferred until the new pavement and final striping is completed. Drivers are asked to be cautious and on the lookout for changes.

TxDOT maintains the three highways that converge in Fredericksburg, including U.S. Highway 290, U.S. Highway 87 and State Highway 16.

Meanwhile, the City's own Street Department is continuing its annual repaving project, which includes 90 blocks throughout town. While TxDOT works on Main Street, City crews will continue level up and paving work on the side streets.
