Roxborough Memorial Hospital: Leading the Way in Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation

Physical rehabilitation is a vital process that varies based on location and available resources. At Roxborough Memorial Hospital, the acute inpatient rehab unit on the 4th floor stands out, offering the highest level of therapy in a state-of-the-art environment.

Acute inpatient rehab is designed for individuals with complex medical conditions, including strokes, amputations, fractured hips, burns, heart and lung diseases, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and neurologic disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Patients benefit from intensive therapy, managed by a doctor specializing in Rehabilitation Medicine, who is available at least three times a week to oversee medical issues and coordinate care.

The focus in acute inpatient rehab is on teaching patients essential daily living skills that many take for granted, such as bathing, dressing, and using the restroom. Patients learn to navigate mobility with assistive devices like rolling walkers, canes, and wheelchairs, ensuring they feel confident and safe. Family involvement is also a key component, with training provided to help loved ones support the patient's transition back home.

Safety is a top priority at Roxborough Memorial; the rehab unit has recorded no falls resulting in harm and no pressure injuries in the past two years. The last hospital-acquired infection occurred in 2022, highlighting the facility's commitment to patient safety and care quality.

The overarching goal of the acute inpatient rehab program is to expedite recovery, helping patients return home safely and regain their independence as quickly as possible.

For those exploring rehabilitation options, it's important to understand the available pathways:

  • Subacute Rehab: Typically offered in skilled nursing facilities, this option provides less intensive therapy and medical oversight, with longer stays than acute inpatient rehab.
  • Outpatient Rehab: Ideal for individuals transitioning from acute inpatient rehab or those who can manage travel between home and the therapy gym.
  • Home Therapy: This service is beneficial for patients who still require support but no longer need the level of care provided in a hospital.

If you've experienced a significant medical event that affects your mobility, consider Roxborough Memorial Hospital's Acute Inpatient Rehab facility to help you reclaim your independence and improve your quality of life.
