Recognizing National Backflow Prevention Day: Ensuring the Integrity of Our Water Supply

National Backflow Prevention Day is August 16, and we recognize the vital importance of backflow prevention devices and the skilled cross-connection inspectors who safeguard the integrity of our community's water supply.

A cross connection occurs when a drinking water pipe connects to a pipe containing non-potable, or untreated, water. Properly installed and maintained backflow prevention devices protect against untreated water from other sources, such as wells or irrigation systems, from entering the drinking water supply. In the event of a malfunction in household pressure equipment or an unexpected drop in pressure within our distribution system, these devices prevent water that has already exited our system from re-entering, thereby guarding against possible contaminants.

Equally important is the work of our cross-connection inspectors. These professionals play a key role in ensuring that backflow prevention devices are correctly installed, tested, and maintained. Their expertise is essential to maintaining the safety and quality of our water supply.

As we observe National Backflow Prevention Day, we acknowledge the critical role of both technology and the dedicated individuals who work to protect our water resources. Find more information about backflow prevention.
