Aug 15, 2024 New campus dining partnership with Chartwells

Aug. 15, 2024

Dear Campus Community,

As a follow up to our Spring announcement regarding University Auxiliary Servicees and Chartwells Higher Education, we are delighted to announce a new dining partnership between CSUCI and Chartwells beginning this Fall 2024. Founded in 1997, Chartwells is a highly regarded company that provides dining services for several of our sister CSU campuses and for many other colleges and universities throughout the country.

To better understand how to elevate the dining experience on campus, we conducted surveys and focus groups. These were coordinated by ASI's Student Government in collaboration with staff in the Vice President for Student Affairs' office during the Spring 2024 semester. Feedback received called for greater variety of cuisine and dining options, and increased opportunity for healthy foods on-the-go with a focus on local and sustainable sourcing.

The improved dining experience is rooted in wellness, with restaurant-quality delicious, nutritious ingredients. Simultaneously, the dining experience will expand beyond the culinary component as Chartwells will merge themselves into the Dolphin family community by providing opportunities for enhancing our student sense of belonging with our Student Affairs partners.

Some of the changes to look forward to in the upcoming academic year will include:

  • Curated menus to feed your mind and body, whether dining in at Islands Kitchen (formerly Islands Café) or grabbing a quick bite to go from Sprig & Sprout fresh food at the Sea Store Market inside the Student Union building (east wing)
  • Catering services available to all campus areas and student groups
  • Enhanced student experience with interactive events such as a Teaching Kitchen series, DIY activities, and themed events
  • New technology to make your ordering experience faster and better, including kiosk ordering at select Islands Kitchen stations and Boost Mobile Ordering at Ekho's Café (formerly Lighthouse Café) located in the Student Union building (west wing)
  • After-hours dining with our new Virtual Kitchen. Order through Boost Mobile ordering app, pick-up and enjoy!
  • New products, specials and limited time offers at the Sea Store Market
  • New additions to our food options including sushi, poke bowls and boba!

You will notice that our campus Chartwells team includes employees from University Auxiliary Services who will continue to be part of our campus community. John Fisher of Chartwells will serve as our new General Manager for Dining Services.

Our Dining Services staff look forward to meeting everyone during Weeks of Welcome as we invite students, faculty, and staff to the Fall semester with a new and improved dining experience. We encourage you to learn more about the new dining program at www.dineoncampus.com/csuci and take advantage of the innovative things to come.

Kind regards,
Eboni Ford Turnbow, Ph.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs
