With most of the election results in, Republicans have regained control of the White House and U.S. Senate, while the outcome of The House of Representatives remains up in the air.
Here's an overview of key races we've been following in Maryland, DC, Delaware and Virginia:
Maryland:
U.S. Senate: Angela Alsobrooks won, succeeding retiring Senator Ben Cardin and defeating two-term Republican Governor Larry Hogan. As the County Executive of Prince George's County, Alsobrooks has been a committed partner to local credit unions, championing initiatives for consumer protection, fraud prevention, and financial literacy. We look forward to collaborating with her on these priorities in her new role in the Senate.
Congressional District 3: State Senator Sarah Elfreth emerged victorious over Republican Robert Steinberger, succeeding Representative John Sarbanes, who did not seek reelection. Having established a strong working relationship during her tenure in the State Senate, Elfreth is expected to be a staunch advocate for credit unions in Congress.
Congressional District 2: Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski won the seat, defeating Republican businesswoman Kim Klacik. Olszewski, who replaces retiring Representative Dutch Ruppersberger, is known for his steadfast support of local businesses, including credit unions. We look forward to his representation of our interests in Washington.
Congressional District 6: The election remains tightly contested, with each candidate holding 50% of the vote. It may take a few days before a winner is declared. We have established strong working relationships with both candidates-through campaign discussions with McClain Delaney and ongoing collaboration with Parrott during his service in the Maryland House of Representatives. We will continue to share timely updates.
Incumbents in Districts 1, 4, 5, 7, and 8 have retained their seats. We have strong, established relationships with each of these representatives and look forward to continuing on the progress we've made with them over the years.
District of Columbia:
Voters passed a ballot initiative for ranked-choice voting, pending approval from the DC Council. Democratic Council members Brooke Pinto (Ward 2) and Janeese Lewis George (Ward 4) ran unopposed, while Robert C. White Jr. and Christina Henderson were reelected to at-large seats. In Ward 7, local leader Wendell Felder was also elected to the council.
Delaware:
Democrat Matt Meyer defeated Republican Mike Ramone to become the next Governor, succeeding term-limited John Carney. Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester secured the U.S. Senate seat, and Sarah McBride won the state's sole Congressional seat.
Virginia:
Democratic incumbent Tim Kaine retained his Senate seat, defeating Republican challenger Hung Cao. In the House of Representatives, Virginia voters elected 5 Republicans and 6 Democrats.
