Is your teen ready to jump into the exciting world of 3D printing? This challenge was built for them!

The Fort Worth Public Library is challenging teens in grades 6-12 to test their creativity and engineering skills. The challenge is to see who can build the best bridge using a 3D printer.

The contest runs through September, with all final projects due before the library closes at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30. The winner will be awarded a new 3D printer, and the runner-up will get a 3D pen as a prize.

When it comes to engineering projects in the real world, they usually come with time, money and material challenges, said Christina Granados, the Library's teen program coordinator. "This lighthearted contest mimics those constraints and encourages you to think creatively," she said.

Why it matters: While 3D printers are not new to the Library, it is the Library's first citywide CAD Contest. CAD is short for "computer-aided design." The contest encourages youth to consider the engineering challenge and helps build the types of skills many may use in their future careers.

Donations to the Fort Worth Public Library Foundation funded the purchase of the specific ABS filament required for the challenge.

What they're saying: "It's not just about funding the purchase of 3D-printer filament," said Foundation President & CEO Andrea L. Ash. "It's about investing in the future of technology and design so it can inspire and empower the next generation of innovators. The Foundation is committed to fundraising to support these initiatives because they are vital to fostering creativity among our community's youth."

Completed bridge submissions will be judged on strength, rigidity and how they look. Submissions will not be returned because they will be broken during the weight-testing portion - although Granados notes that the digital designs will live on.

"Use your imagination to design a strong bridge. Take inspiration from architecture. Fearlessly experiment," she said. "3D-print your prototype at the library for free. Test it and think about how to make improvements. You can repeat the engineering design process as many times as you want before the contest deadline."

Fort Worth Public Library staff are available to help contestants get started on the design software and can help with printers. Anyone interested in 3D printing is invited to attend a free 3D design or 3D printing class offered at select Fort Worth Public Library locations.
