Meeting of the Foreign Minister of Armenia with the Secretary-General of the UN Tourism

12 September, 2024

On September 12, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan met with Zurab Pololikashvili, the Secretary-General of the UN Tourism.

During the meeting, issues on the cooperation of Armenia with the World Tourism Organization, as well as tourism and sustainable development in general, were discussed.

Minister Mirzoyan noted: "The Government of the Republic of Armenia is implementing important, targeted reforms for promoting tourism, Armenian production and its export, and attracting investments in the tourism sector. As of 2024, more than 40 airlines operate direct flights to Armenia, which has great potential to become an active crossroads."

Ararat Mirzoyan and Zurab Pololikashvili touched upon the activities within the framework of the UN Executive Council on Tourism, where Armenia was elected as a member for the 2021-2025 term. Among the joint initiatives, the interlocutors commended the UN Tourism Global Conference being held in Yerevan these days. Zurab Pololikashvili mentioned in his remarks: "We started with Georgia, then Chile, Argentina, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and now Armenia. We are adding Armenia to the wine tourism map."

The importance of ensuring stability and development in the South Caucasus and, in that context, the key role of unblocking regional economic and transport infrastructures and increasing their network were touched upon at the meeting.
