Line Fire Updates

Incident Summary

On September 5, 2024, a fire started in the San Bernardino National Forest in California, now known as the Line Fire. High winds and temperatures, combined with low humidity have been the primary drivers of the Line Fire's rapid spread, which threatens the City of Big Bear Lake and surrounding communities.

The City of Big Bear Lake is closely monitoring the Line Fire and weather conditions. Staff is in close communication with our interagency partners, and will continue to share important updates and notices via email, the City's website, and our social media channels: X, Facebook, and Instagram. In the event of a power outage or internet service disruption, updates will also be broadcast on local radio stations KBHR 93.3 FM and 102.5 FM.

Important Updates

  • On September 10, 2024, City Manager Erik Sund, Director of Emergency Services of the City of Big Bear Lake, proclaimed that a local emergency exists in the City of Big Bear Lake.
  • An Evacuation Order is in effect for the West End of Big Bear Lake from the Big Bear Dam east to Wildrose Lane and the south shoreline to Bluff Lake Basin.
  • Evacuation Warnings are in effect for the rest of Big Bear Valley including all other areas of the City of Big Bear Lake, Fawnskin, Big Bear City, and Baldwin Lake.
  • Bear Valley Community Healthcare District ("Bear Valley Hospital") Emergency Room is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patients seeking care will be stabilized, and if further care is needed, will be transferred to another facility outside the evacuation zone, based on the patient's condition.
  • All schools within Bear Valley Unified School District (BVUSD) will remain closed through Friday, September 13, 2024.
  • San Bernardino issued Forest Order NO. 05-12-00-24-09, creating a Forest Closure Area around the Line Fire. All National Forest lands, trails, and roads are closed to the public within that zone through November 30, 2024.
  • On September 7, 2024, San Bernardino County proclaimed the existence of a local emergency in response to the Line Fire. Later in the day, California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency in San Bernardino County. Both actions make San Bernardino County eligible for state and federal assistance in responding to and recovering from the fire.

Road Closures

Road closure information provided by Caltrans and CHP. Plan your route accordingly to avoid delays. For the most current information, call 211, follow Caltrans on Facebook or visit: http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov.

  • Highway 38 is closed between Bryant Street in Yucaipa and Lake Williams. Only residents who live along Highway 38 may use it to evacuate. Traffic control points are being manned by CHP and Caltrans.
  • Highway 18 is closed from Kuffel Canyon (1.3 mi north of the junction of Highway 173 at Santa's Village) to Big Bear Dam (Highway 38). Evacuations are able to occur, but no inbound traffic allowed as fire crews are in the area.
  • Highway 330 is closed northbound from Highland Avenue to Highway 18 in Running Springs.
