"With over $8.5 billionalready invested in Missouri's infrastructure, the Biden-Harris Administration's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to pave the way to a brighter, safer future for communities across Missouri's Fifth Congressional District and all throughout America's heartland," said Congressman Cleaver. "For far too long, Prospect Avenue has been one of the most dangerous corridors in Kansas City for pedestrians and drivers alike. With this federal funding, Kansas City can now implement road safety improvements that will help to save lives, improve traffic, and strengthen economic development throughout the area."
Prospect Avenue is on Kansas City's high-injury network and is one of the most dangerous corridors in the City for pedestrians, with reckless driving and speeding as key causal factors. To address these issues, this federal grant will enable the implementation of sidewalk and bus stop improvements, pedestrian refuge islands, curb extensions, retroreflective backplates, and pedestrian and street-level lighting, concentrating safety measures on the most dangerous 1.86-mile section of Prospect Avenue.
The impact area of this project includes more public parks than almost any corridor in Kansas City, including Sanford Brown Park, Oak Park, Ivanhoe Park, and Brush Creek trails. This project will implement Proven Safety Countermeasures to reduce crash risk, expand the network of safe and accessible routes, and restore a once-thriving commercial corridor.
