The Insurance Department's newly formed Advisory Council, tasked by the Commissioner with developing and recommending a risk mitigation and resiliency program to help make Connecticut homes and business more resilient to impacts of severe weather will hold its first public informational session on:

  • Wednesday, December 18, 2024, 11 a.m.
  • Legislative Office Building, Room 1A, 300 Capitol Ave., Hartford, CT 06106

State Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais established the Advisory Council in October, bringing together expertise from a wide variety of experts in insurance, risk management, construction, climate policy, non-profits, finance and consumer advocacy.

After brief opening remarks from Commissioner Mais and committee co-chairs Sonja Larkin-Thorne, Consumer Advocate and Robert Hotaling, Deputy Program Advisor for Infrastructure, Department of Revenue Services (DRS), the meeting will feature these speakers and presentations:

  • Social and Mental Health Impact of Severe Weather Events - Richard Branigan - Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island
  • Economic Impact of Severe Weather Events - Jeffrey Czajkowski, Ph.D. - Director, Center for Insurance Policy and Research (CIPR), a division of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)
  • Connecticut Resiliency - James O'Donnell - Professor of Marine Sciences and Executive Director of CIRCA, UConn
  • Climate Risk and Physical Resiliency Programs - Brian E. Powell - Catastrophe Risk Resilience Specialist, CIPR
  • Proven, Affordable Standards for Strengthening Homes Against Severe Weather - Alexandra Cary - Fortified Market Development Manager, Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS)
  • Safer Homes and Resilience Playbook: Creating a Culture of Resilience through Code Leadership and Public Awareness - Leslie Chapman-Henderson - President and CEO, Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, Inc. (FLASH)
