09/20/2024

The City of Fargo is warning residents about a phone scam involving its Utility Billing Department.

The Auditor's Office, which oversees the Utility Billing Department, received a report from a utility customer who answered a call from a 1-800 number and the caller falsely claimed they were a City of Fargo employee. The caller asked for the customer's Social Security number, date of birth and debit card number. This is a reminder that The City of Fargo Utility Billing Department will never ask for a customer's Social Security number.

In general, residents are advised to never give out account numbers, Social Security numbers or passwords to anyone they do not trust. If a caller claims to be from a company or government agency, hang up and call the company or agency directly to verify. Anyone looking to contact The City of Fargo's Utility Billing Department can call 701.241.1324 or visit FargoND.gov/UtilityBilling.

Anyone who believes they are the victim of a scam should contact The Fargo Police Department at 701.235.4493.
