EU releases €1.2 million in humanitarian aid to respond to floods in Mindanao

This allocation will be used to provide emergency relief to the most vulnerable families in heavily affected areas, focusing in particular on food assistance, access to safe water and sanitation facilities, and other essential services.

This new funding comes in addition to the €3.1 million already allocated in humanitarian assistance to the Philippines earlier this year, to respond to the protracted crisis in Mindanao, and to the floods which affected other parts of the island in February.

Background

In the past weeks, successive severe weather events have led to massive flooding in the Philippines, with the southwest monsoon rains being intensified by typhoons Butchoy (Prapiroon) and Carina (Gaemi).

The EU funding is being made available via the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) department of the European Commission. With headquarters in Brussels and a global network of field offices, the EU helps millions of victims of conflict and disasters around the world every year, providing assistance to the most vulnerable people on the basis of humanitarian needs.
