RELEASE: Fact Check on Trump’s Record on Crime and Immigration

LANSING - Tomorrow, Donald Trump is going to visit Howell and spread the same lies and misinformation on crime and the border as he always does during these stunt visits. Before he even gets the chance, we are setting the record straight on his history of failing Michiganders and blocking real, bipartisan solutions.

FACT CHECK: President Biden and Vice President Harris, not Trump, lowered violent crime and made Americans safer.

  • Brennan Center for Justice: "Following a decades-long decline, violent crime rose during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2020, President Trump's last year in office, murder rates climbed by nearly 30 percent and assault rates by more than 10 percent…since 2021, violent crime has started to fall. According to the FBI, as of 2022 violent crime rates had fallen by 4 percent and murder rates by roughly 7 percent since 2020."
  • Time and time again, Trump incited chaos and violence with dangerous rhetoric while doing nothing to actually address crime. On the other hand, President Biden and Vice President Harris have worked to fund police officers, crime prevention programs, and community intervention programs that have seen consistently lower crime rates.

FACT CHECK: Donald Trump will not secure the border

  • The New Republic: "A border bill negotiated by Republicans and Democrats has died in the Senate-with the help of lots of opposition from Republicans, including the bill's main author. Senators voted 43-50 to take down the bill, an attempt to renew a border proposal that was tanked earlier this year thanks to Donald Trump."
  • When President Biden negotiated the bipartisan border deal, Donald Trump got his lackeys in the Senate to kill the bill - endangering Americans across the country as the crisis at the border continued.

FACT CHECK: Trump lies about Michigan's rental housing subsidy

  • Detroit Free Press: "Former President Donald Trump on Thursday attacked Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's program to provide up to $500 a month in temporary rental subsidies to help house immigrants and refugees, falsely claiming it's available to 'anyone who accepts illegal aliens'."
  • This program has almost only helped refugees from war-torn countries and isn't available for illegal immigrants. None of the 1,242 recipients of this credit have pending asylum applications, despite Trump's claims that illegal immigrants are coming into your homes.
