Saturday: Big crowds expected for sold out Opening Day of horseracing

Saturday is Opening Day for summer horseracing, a day the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says "is not only about big bets and fast horses, but celebrating the season in style."

By late afternoon, much of that sold out celebration will begin to migrate to downtown Del Mar, where great numbers of see-and-be-seen revelers can be expected to fill restaurants, bars, streets and sidewalks.

To prepare of the busy night and respond quickly to calls for service, Del Mar has ordered extra Sheriff's deputies and has extended hours for the City's enforcement staff.

To improve traffic circulation, portions of northbound Camino Del Mar in front of Del Mar Plaza and 15th Street adjoining L'Auberge Del Mar will be closed to parking and repurposed as rideshare zones.

Extra staff from Public Works will be on hand to service waste receptacles and keep public spaces clean. This week, Public Works is sprucing up landscaped areas and inspecting sidewalks to limit trip hazards.

Residents are advised to prepare for traffic delays on surface streets and Interstate 5.
