WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, on the third anniversary of the horrific terrorist attack at Abbey Gate outside Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport that claimed the lives of 13 brave U.S. servicemembers, Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart (FL-26) and John Rutherford (FL-05) pay tribute by reintroducing the 13 Folds of Honor Act, which providesa script to be read during official or burial flag-folding ceremonies.

This legislation adds to the flag-folding presentation that honors the service and sacrifice of veterans or deceased servicemembers. The ceremonial folding and presentation of the flag is a moving tribute of lasting importance to a veteran's family. This script emphasizes the meaning of each of the 13 folds that symbolize our nation's unity and immeasurable respect for veterans and their families. These 13 folds also symbolize the 13 servicemembers who courageously gave their last full measure of devotion and sacrifice to our country following the devastating and disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

"This legislation honors all our brave servicemembers, especially the 13 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation," said Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart. "Their heroism is etched in the heart of our country, and behind each of them stands a Gold Star Family whose strength and resilience continue to inspire. While no words can ease the pain of their loss, the 13 Folds of Honor script symbolizes our profound gratitude and unwavering respect for their service. My deepest thanks to Former Commander Dr. J.B. Holmes of the Golden Gate VFW Post 7721 for his tireless commitment to our veterans and for championing this meaningful tribute."

"We owe a debt of gratitude to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms," said Congressman Rutherford. "This bill will codify the meaningful tribute said while folding a burial or ceremonial flag in memory of the fallen."
