PEI Police seize kilograms of drugs in enforcement action

August 23, 2024 Borden Carleton - PEI police were engaged in drug enforcement yesterday on the Confederation Bridge which resulted in several kilograms of drugs seized and three people arrested.

Late in the afternoon on August 22, 2024 several PEI Police Units conducted a targeted traffic stop on the Confederation Bridge. Police seized 1 kilogram of cocaine, 1 kilogram of crystal methamphetamine (brick), a bag containing in excess of 500 pills including meth pills and other drugs, 101 cartons of contraband cigarettes and edged weapons. This seizure represents thousands of doses of illegal drugs.

"This seizure, along with the arrest of these three individuals, will have a significant impact on drug trafficking networks that try to operate on PEI, and demonstrates how the combined efforts of police agencies across the Island can address the illegal drug trade," says Chief Superintendent Kevin Lewis, PEI RCMP Commanding Officer.

This operation was led by RCMP General Investigations Unit with the assistance from

  • Prince District Joint Forces Operations (JFO). The Prince District JFO is a stand-alone unit comprised of members of the Prince District RCMP, Summerside Police Services, and Kensington Police Services.
  • RCMP Major Crime Unit.
  • Summerside Police Services Major Crime Unit.
  • Ontario Central Region RCMP.
  • RCMP Traffic Services.
  • RCMP Police Dog Service.

Dean John Fairhurst, Stephen Ronald Gass, and Mary Laura MacDonald of Prince Edward Island will appear in court in Summerside today and are charged with the following:

  1. Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
  2. Possession for the purpose of trafficking Methamphetamine contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
  3. Possession for the purpose of trafficking Hydromorphone contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
  4. Illegal possession of tobacco contrary to the Excise Act
  5. Possession of more than one thousand grams of tobacco contrary to section 16(2) of the Tobacco Tax Act.
