Macon Mental Health Matters receives funding to provide free support services in community

On Tuesday, August 20, the Commission unanimously approved allocating $500,000 of American Rescue Plans Act (ARPA) funds towards mental health assistance and support for our community.

"We're incredibly excited about the renewal of funding for Macon Mental Health Matters," said Macon Mental Health Matters (MMHM) Director Andrea Cooke. "This support allows us to continue offering vital, no-cost mental health services to those who need it most. Together, we're making a lasting impact on our community's well-being."

From March 2023 to February 2024 more than 1,200 people have benefitted from the resources provided by MMHM. This includes going to Pop-Up gyms, mental health meetups, one on one counseling, and more.

"What MMHM does for our community is crucial," said Mayor Lester Miller. "Mental health wellness is something we need to normalize, and I think we have been getting closer to that, thanks to the work MMHM does. We are proud to continue funding this initiative so everyone can get the resources they need without any barriers."

Over the last three years MMHM has also supported the development of 37 counseling interns providing approximately 19,000 hours of clinical experience and supervision.

Plans for the upcoming year includes another Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study, enhancing Teranga experience, starting a Mental Health Symposium, and more. For more MMHM updates and activities, visit www.MaconMentalHealthMatters.com.
