The Northern Michigan University Orchestra will present "String Masterworks," a tour through musical history featuring pioneering pieces that influenced the development of string orchestra. Admission to the event-taking place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Reynolds Recital Hall-is free and open to the public.

Individual movements from notable works will include the music of seminal composers such as Coreli, Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Grieg, and Tchaikovsky. Marquette Regional History historians will provide introductions about each composer and information regarding the context of the time period in which they were composed.

Substitute orchestra director Janis Shier Peterson will lead students in presenting Sonata da Chiesa, Fugue in G Minor, Salzburg Sinfonia #1, and Holberg Suite in the Olden Style, among other archival arrangements.
