LOS ANGELES - Metrolink, Southern California's six-county regional passenger rail provider, today announced the extension of its Student Adventure Pass program through June 30, 2025. The Student Adventure Pass was introduced in October 2023and allows anyone with a valid student ID - including K-12, trade school and college students - to travel anywhere on the Metrolink system free of charge.

"We are excited by the success of the Student Adventure Pass, which has nearly doubled Metrolink's student ridership since its inception," Metrolink Board Chair and City of Highland Mayor Pro Tem Larry McCallon said. "The program has delivered much-needed financial relief for tens of thousands of Southern California students who can apply those cost savings to food, rent and other educational expenses such as books and school supplies. By introducing a new generation to our region's public transportation network, the Student Adventure Pass is also laying the groundwork for a more sustainable, less car-dependent future."

The Student Adventure Pass has been used more than half a million times since the program launched. More than 32,000 students from 557 schools have registered for the program using Metrolink's Mobile App, and mobile activations represent 55% of Student Adventure Pass usage to date. Countless other students have enjoyed the real-time convenience of procuring their daily pass from a ticket machine at the station. As of May 2024, students accounted for 25% of Metrolink's total ridership compared to 16% during the same window in 2023, demonstrating significant year-over-year growth.

The Metrolink Board of Directors approved the program's one-year extension at their June 28 regular meeting. The Student Adventure Pass was set to expire on June 30, following a successful nine-month pilot period. The decision to extend the program received support from Metrolink's five member agencies: the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) and the Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC).

Student Adventure Pass users must be able to present both an active ticket and valid student identification upon fare inspection. Riders can obtain a Student Adventure Pass ticket through Metrolink's Mobile App or at any Metrolink ticket machine. Metrolink tickets allow for free transfersto many local transportation agencies, including LA Metro, for first- and last-mile connections.

In anticipation of the program's extension and to ensure continuous service, Metrolink has begun issuing students with registered mobile app accounts a new pass in their ticket wallet with an expiration date of Dec. 31, 2024. Metrolink will update the expiration date before the end of the calendar year.
