LITHIUM BATTERY SAFETY 101

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue wants to bring awareness to the potential risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries supply power to many kinds of devices but become more prone to overheating, catching fire, and even lead to explosions if damaged or mishandled during use, charging, or storage.

Safety Tips to follow:

• Only use the battery that is designed for the device.

• Only use the charging mechanism and cord that came with the device.

• Do not charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or on a couch.

• Stop using the battery if you notice these problems: odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, leaking, or odd noises. In the event of a fire, evacuate and call 9-1-1.
