Cleveland State's Operation STEM Program Receives Insight Into Diversity Magazine's 2024 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award

Cleveland State University's (CSU) Operation STEM program (OpSTEM) received the 2024 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). CSU will be featured, along with 82 other recipients, in the September 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine.

Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research and successful programs and initiatives.

"We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication, and mentorship for underrepresented students," said Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine. "We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of higher education and beyond."

The magazine selected CSU's OpSTEM program because of its commitment to supporting Cleveland State's diverse body of STEM students achieve success in their academic pursuits for over ten years. OpSTEM supports students pursuing all disciplines of engineering, data science, computer science, math, chemistry, physics and biology (calculus track), in particular first-generation and minority students. OpSTEM scholars participate in a summer bridge program (the OpSTEM Summer Institute), where they receive math skills review, explore CSU's campus through self-guided activities, engage in a STEM speaker series, receive academic guidance, make new friends and learn about free resources on campus. During the academic year, scholars meet with their OpSTEM coach, participate in supplemental instruction sessions led by STEM peer teachers and engage in professional development workshops.
