Sea Shepherd CEO Receives 2024 National Ohtli Award

On September 16, 2024, Pritam Singh, President and CEO of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was honored with the prestigious National Ohtli Award. The award was presented by Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, the Ambassador of Mexico to the United States, in recognition of Pritam's outstanding contributions to Mexico and the protection of its natural heritage.

The Ohtli Award, derived from the Nahuatl word meaning "path," is given to individuals whose life's work has significantly benefited Mexicans domestically and abroad. Pritam's decades of dedication to ocean conservation, animal protection, children's education, and social change exemplify this spirit.

A Historic Ceremony on Mexico's Independence Day

The award ceremony took place on Mexico's Independence Day, underscoring the cultural and environmental significance of this recognition. Ambassador Moctezuma presented Pritam with the award, which includes a medal, a Mexican silver rosette, and a diploma from the Institute of Mexicans Abroad under Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Gratitude on Behalf of Sea Shepherd

Pritam Singh expressed deep gratitude for the honor, thanking Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma for his trust and friendship. Speaking on behalf of Sea Shepherd's captains, crew, staff, and volunteers, he dedicated the award to the ongoing fight for marine life conservation:

"I accept this award on behalf of the Vaquita, the Totoaba, and all ocean species for whom we work together every day."

A Decade of Partnership with Mexico

For the past 10 years, Sea Shepherd has collaborated closely with the Government of Mexico to protect endangered species like the Vaquita, the world's most endangered marine mammal, and the Totoaba, a species targeted by illegal fishing. Together, Sea Shepherd and Mexico have worked to conserve these species in Mexican waters, tackling the threats of illegal fishing and environmental degradation.

This partnership serves as a testament to the impact that can be achieved through international cooperation in the fight to protect our oceans.
