Denton City Council Approves Energy Cost Adjustment Rate Increase

Denton, TX - July 29, 2024 - During their July 16 meeting, the Denton City Council approved an increase to the Energy Cost Adjustment (ECA) rate for Denton Municipal Electric (DME) customers. The ECA rate will be adjusted to $0.0515 per kWh, up from the previous rate of $0.0447 per kWh, to better reflect actual costs and forecasts associated with the ECA. The new rate, effective August 1, will result in an average increase of $6.80 per month for residential customers, based on a usage of 1000 kWh per month.

In March 2024, the Denton City Council passed an ordinance allowing for quarterly reviews and adjustments to DME's ECA rate. The ECA is a variable rate charged per kWh to recover costs associated with power generation and fuel. If the state lowers or raises these costs, the ECA will adjust accordingly during its quarterly review.

Consistent with the ECA rate schedule, DME and the Finance & Accounting departments will review the ECA balance and rates again in September 2024 and will recommend any necessary adjustments.

DME is proud to serve the Denton community as one of the lowest-cost providers of reliable, safe, 100% renewable energy compared to other renewable and municipal-owned plans. DME remains committed to fostering sustainable energy in Texas.
