City of Milton Ends Recycling Program

Effective October 1, 2024, the City of Milton will terminate its recycling program due to operational inefficiencies and escalating costs. This decision follows a detailed review of the program's sustainability and its environmental and financial impacts.

"The reality is that less than 10% of collected materials nationwide are actually recycled, and Milton has faced similar challenges," said City Manager Ed Spears. "Over the past two years, none of our recycling loads have been accepted due to contamination. As a result, much of what we collect is sent directly to landfills, which defeats the purpose of the program and increases costs."

The discontinuation of the program is projected to save the city approximately $150,000 annually, contrasting with the $30,000 generated in revenue each year. As part of the transition, the City will retrofit the existing recycling cans with new lids, repurposing them for regular waste to be used in ongoing sanitation services.

Next Steps for Current Recycling Customers:

  • Fee Adjustment: Current recycling customers will no longer be charged the monthly $6.63 recycling fee.
  • Return Recycling Can: Customers are asked to return their recycling cans by placing them at the curb on October 2, 2024. Please allow the can to remain at the curb if it is not collected right away, as the process may require multiple cycles to complete.
