Biden to Allow California to Set Strict 2035 Emissions Standards that Could Rapidly Accelerate EVs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Biden Administration will allow California and at least 11 other states to set new emissions standards that would allow for the sale of primarily EVs by 2035, according to reports. For decades, the Clean Air Act has allowed California to set enhanced standards on auto emissions, reigning in toxic emissions from vehicles. In response to the decision, Will Anderson, EV policy advocate with Public Citizen's Climate Program, issued the following statement:

"Allowing California and other states to set tougher standards not only helps protect public health and the environment, but also drives automakers to provide consumers with more options for cleaner, more efficient vehicles. We need American automakers to stay competitive with the global market's trajectory towards electric vehicles. California is the 5th largest economy in the world. Allowing California and others to exert their rights and their market influence will provide even greater incentive for American automakers to prioritize clean, zero emission vehicles."
