IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Cervantes Honored with the ‘Voice of Labor’ Award by LCLAA Los Angeles

IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes has been distinguished with the prestigious "Voice of Labor" Award from the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement's (LCLAA) Los Angeles Chapter. The accolade was bestowed upon Cervantes during the chapter's annual "Si Se Puede" Awards Ceremony, recognizing her commitment and influential contributions to workers' rights.

The "Voice of Labor" Award is a testament to the significant impact that labor activists and leaders can have in advocating for workers' rights, providing a platform for voices that are often unheard, particularly within the Latino community, and fostering positive change within unions, workplaces, and communities.

Cervantes made history as the first Latina to hold the position of General Secretary-Treasurer in the IAM. Her commitment and hard work have not only propelled workers' interests forward but also established a model for leadership within the labor movement, promoting the progress of women and minorities.

"If you want to be successful and be strong, you need a strong woman," said Cervantes.

IAM Western Territory Grand Lodge Representative Richard Suarez presented Cervantes with the "Voice of Labor" Award and commended her lifelong commitment to the labor movement and her role as a formidable voice for workers, their families, and the broader community.

The event saw the gathering of notable figures including LCLAA Los Angeles Chapter President and LCLAA National Executive Vice-President Xochitl Cobarrubias, LCLAA National Secretary-Treasurer Sergio Rascon, Former U.S. Secretary of Labor and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, LA County Federation of Labor President Yvonne Wheeler and California State Senator Maria Elena Durazo. Their speeches highlighted the collective strive towards a future where labor rights are not only acknowledged but ardently protected.

The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), which has chapters across the country, is a national organization representing the interests of approximately two million Latino unionists throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Cervantes serves as Vice President on the LCLAA National Executive Board.

Cervantes has also received the LCLAA's "Women's Leadership Award" for her efforts in empowering Latinos and serving the labor movement.
