GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Newton County

Covington, GA - (August 24, 2024) - The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Covington, Newton County, Georgia. On August 24, 2024, the Newton County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation. One man, later identified as John Cortez Biles, age 34, of Covington, was injured during the incident. No officers were injured.

Preliminary information shows that a woman called 911 to a home in the 400 block of Barshay Drive in Covington, GA. This request came after a safety concern in the home. When deputies arrived at the home, they found Biles inside the home. NCSO deputies were familiar with Biles, who had outstanding warrants for his arrest. Biles exited the back door of the home. He produced a handgun. Officers fired at Biles, hitting him.

Biles has been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The GBI will continue to conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is done, it will be given to the Newton County District Attorney's office for review.
