CARE Statement on Spread of Cholera in Sudan

August 20, 2024 - "In Sudan, communities already grappling with the horrors of war are now suffering from a rising tide of cholera brought about by widespread floods. There are so far over 300 confirmed cases with 22 confirmed fatalities in Kassala and Al Gezira states. Inadequate sanitation facilities in already cramped displacement sites have fueled the spread of the disease in these states. Most of Sudan's health facilities have been decimated by the fighting. Women and girls remain highly susceptible to contracting the disease as the primary caregivers to ailing family members. CARE Sudan is working to support affected communities by rehabilitating an existing Cholera Treatment Center and supplying treatment beds and meals for patients. CARE is also training community volunteers and enhancing water supply across Kassala and Al Gezira. A concerted and swift response is needed to halt the spread of disease, provide treatment to those infected, and save lives."
