Civil Rights Director John E. Johnson, Jr. Issues Statement on the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Lansing, MI-John E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued the following statement in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
"Sixty years ago, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 - landmark legislation that established protection from discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin - was signed into law. In a time of conflict and crisis, when the push for civil rights was met with extreme resistance and violence, changemakers stood steadfast in their commitment to its passage, and we are all the beneficiaries of their dedication. Michigan has always led in the fight for equity, and in 1964 - the same year the Civil Rights Act became law - ours was the first state in the nation to enshrine civil rights protections in its constitution. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is determined to build on that legacy of leadership, taking on today's threats to civil rights, from language access to artificial intelligence and beyond."
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides training and services to businesses, organizations and government agencies on diversity initiatives and equal employment law.
